Investigating Instructions in Year 2

This week the Year 2 children have enjoyed being instruction investigators. They learned all about bossy verbs and worked brilliantly on a range of activities. Firstly, we looked at bossy verbs in sentences and how they are used to give clear instructions. Then the children completed a concept sort activity, where they had to sort bossy verbs into four categories: directions, craft, cooking and exercise. We then realised that we had a problem in class; Caroline didn’t know how to make squash. So, the children worked in groups to give her clear, precise instructions using a range of bossy verbs and time connectives. Finally, the children enjoyed investigating instructional texts on Get Epic, looking for bossy verbs and other features of the genre. Next week we will be undertaking lots more activities linked to instruction texts… including making a very tasty treat which the children will be bringing home!

On Monday, the Year 2 children enjoyed celebrating Diwrnod Shwmae. The event aims to show that the Welsh language belongs to us all – fluent speakers, learners or those shy about their Welsh. The children made colourful Shwmae banners to promote the Welsh language, and enjoyed using Shwmae in their conversations throughout the week.

Year 2 have really enjoyed learning about lines of symmetry. The children then worked outside to apply their knowledge and skills by creating symmetrical butterflies using natural materials. The children could explain how to make their art work symmetrical, looking at position, colour and shape.

Book Fair Success!

A huge ‘Thank You’ to everybody who supported our Scholastic book fair this week. The total spent was £789.30, which means we will receive 60% commission on all purchases! This works out as £473.58 which we can spend on purchasing new reading material for the children. Diolch yn fawr everybody. Your support is greatly appreciated!

This week the Year 2 children have been further developing their knowledge of properties of 2D shapes. They have been focusing on quadrilaterals, pentagons and hexagons, and comparing regular and irregular 2D shapes. Today the children applied their knowledge of shape properties and sorted shapes using Venn diagrams. The children selected their own criteria and showed excellent understanding. Bendigedig Blwyddyn 2!

Hwyl yn y Parc yn yr Hydref

The Year 2 children have been working hard on their Welsh skills this week. They enjoyed listening to the story ‘Hwyl yn y Parc yn yr Hydref’, which is all about the different things that people like to have fun doing in the park in the Autumn. We decided that a visit to the park would definitely be needed to help the children decide what they like doing, so off to the park we went! The children asked each other lots of questions using ‘Beth wyt ti’n hoffi?’, and they enjoyed answering using the new phrases that we learned in the story. The children have now started making their own pages for our class book based on the story, and are using Hwb to add photographs and word-processed sentences to describe what they like doing in the park.

Owl Collages

This week the Year 2s enjoyed making beautiful collages of owls using natural materials. They discussed the different shades of the leaves and which materials would be best suited to the different parts of their owl pictures. I’m sure you’ll agree that the finished collages looked wonderful.
