Year 2 Christmas Traditions Trip

Yesterday the Year 2 children visited Swansea museum and the Waterfront museum to find out more about Christmas traditions. Our topic this term has been ‘Glitter and Glow’, and we have enjoyed finding out about different celebrations.
In Swansea museum, we listened to stories which explained where different traditions began. We all enjoyed acting out the stories, and had a turn at playing with toys from long ago. In the afternoon we moved on to the Waterfront museum, where we learnt about Victorian Christmas traditions. We then enjoyed making some Victorian Christmas cards and pomanders. A fantastic time was had by all.

Y2 Backed the Bid Today!

Today Year 2 pupils were asked to Back the Bid for Swansea to become the City of Culture. Even though Swansea wasn’t successful, it was a fantastic opportunity for the children, and they did us proud as always.

Year 2 Candle Investigation

Today the Year 2 children completed their candle experiment. They discovered that the pillar candle would be the best one to send to Santa because it burned the slowest, which would then mean that the elves would have light for longer so that they could make more toys during the power cut. They completed tables using their results and then made bar charts on Hwb showing the difference in the length of each candle before and after burning. They then learnt how to send emails, and enjoyed emailing Santa to let him know about the results of their experiment. Hopefully we will receive a reply soon…

Santa S.O.S.

Yesterday the Year 2 children received a very important letter from Santa. We were asked to help him because they have had a power cut in the North Pole and the elves can’t continue making toys as they cannot see what they are doing! Santa set us the challenge of finding him a suitable candle which would allow the elves to continue making toys. The children decided they should begin by finding out which candles are available, so they used their research skills and looked into which types of candles we could use. They then did some fantastic problem solving using a candle catalogue, and showed super addition, subtraction and multiplication skills with money. The children then decided that they should test out some candles to see which one would burn the longest to allow they elves to work for as long ad possible. They set Mrs. Cusack the task of collecting the equipment that they want to use, and today they will be undertaking their experiment. We will then email Santa to let him know which candle we will send to him via our class elf. Watch this space for updates!

Marvellous Measuring in Year 2!

The children have been further developing their measuring skills using standard units. They enjoyed investigating the heights of children (and adults!) in class, measuring them in decimetres and then converting their findings into centimetres. The fun then really began when they used their measuring skills to carefully measure and cut Christmas wrapping paper. Gwaith Gwych, Blywddyn 2!

Fir Tree Fine Motor Skills in Year 2

Last week we were learning about the story of the Little Fir Tree. We began by closely studying illustrations from the book and developed questions, whilst using our prediction skills. We then looked at rhyming words linked to the text. We created a fantastic piece of shared writing, using lots of wow words, different sentence starters, connectives and a range of punctuation. We then further developed our fine motor skills by creating fir tree models, and enjoyed trying out different ways of joining the pieces together… There was glue and Sellotape everywhere!!!
