Year 2 have had lots of fun today taking part in our Sports Relief activities. They began by participating in Yoga sessions in class. Ozzy Osprey visited the children at playtime to show his support. The children then moved outside to complete independent timed challenges, where they used the skills that they have been working on in PE lessons. After lunch it was time for the sponsored run around the village. The children did very well and it was lovely to see the junior pupils cheering them on! Lots of fun was had by all whilst raising money for a very worthwhile cause.
Today the Year 2 children visited St. Fagan’s as part of our learning about the topic ‘Take a Trip in a Time Machine’. We began by visiting Y Maestr school, where we learned about how school used to be over a hundred years ago. The children were very shocked by the punishments used, and how different the classrooms were. They decided that school nowadays is definitely better! We then had a walk around the village, stopping off at Gwalia stores and Y Siop Losin, where the children enjoyed being treated to some traditional sweets which they could take home as a memento of the day. We then went to visit Beti Bwt, who asked us to help her wash a huge pair of bloomers! The children enjoyed having hands-on experience of what washday used to be like a long time ago. They decided it was very hard work, and are thankful that we now have washing machines that do the hard work for us! We then had a look around the farm, where we saw pigs, chickens and sheep. The children were very excited to see some lambs that were only a few days old! We then had a look at houses throughout time. The children couldn’t believe that people used to use chamber pots, tin baths and how some toilets used to be in the back garden! Finally, it was time for lunch. The children certainly worked up an appetite with all the walking. I’m sure they will all sleep well tonight… and so will the staff! What a fantastic, informative and fun-filled day we had.
This is the second week of our year 6 entrepreneurs club ‘Attitude’. The group runs a variety of activities, this week the pupils got a chance to show off the dance moves with just dance… warming up for Sports Relief tomorrow.
Today the Year 2 children thoroughly enjoyed investigating eggs. They learned how eggs provide food, air and protection for the chick growing inside. They enjoyed finding out about the air sac, yolk, albumen and shell…and got very messy along the way! The children worked on recording their results carefully in different ways. They are now egg experts, and are looking forward to our class eggs arriving on Monday. We can’t wait to watch them hatch into chicks! Gwaith gwych, Year 2!
This week the children have continued learning about the features of explanation texts. They worked collaboratively to sequence contents pages, and discussed the purpose of contents pages in non-fiction texts. Glossaries were also explored. The children sequenced technical words in alphabetical order, and then worked in groups to match definitions to the words. The children also wrote some fantastic explanations about the life cycle of a hen, and were able to use lots of features of the genre including sub-headings. Gwaith gwych, blwyddyn 2!
This week the Year 2 children have been working hard learning about temperature. We have learned how to read various scales, and have compared temperatures, using counting on to find the difference. We enjoyed reading and matching temperatures. We also used the iPads to look at weather forecasts online, and compared the temperatures in various cities around the world.
The Year 2 children have had a fantastic day celebrating World Book Day. We have been focusing on the author Dr. Seuss. We enjoyed looking at rhyming words in his stories, exploring the Seussville website, and completing a problem solving activity based on the book ‘One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish’. The children also participated in an author workshop with Helen Docherty, where they completed some lovely activities based on her book ‘Abracazebra’. Fun has been had by all, and we are all feeling inspired to write our own stories!
The Year 2 children have been busy investigating which material would be the most suitable for making an umbrella. They decided that the best material would be flexible, waterproof and strong. They made some super predictions and had great ideas for testing the materials. They enjoyed writing a clear method and drawing labelled diagrams. Results were then carefully recorded. The children could say whether their predictions were right or wrong, and they came to sensible conclusions based on their findings. Some children even suggested ways to improve the investigation. Gwaith gwych, Blywyydn 2!
