We read the story ‘Hooray for Fish’, looking at the different types of fish…different colours, shapes and sizes. We then thought about how we are all different and how our similarities and differences should be celebrated….we realised that the world would be a very boring place if we were all the same! Here we are creating our own fish designs….every single one unique, different and special!

The Singing Mermaid

We recently read the story ‘The Singing Mermaid’ in Year 1 and we decided to get creative!  The children had the challenge of making their own handprint mermaids or to work as a team to create a new home for the mermaid. The results were fantastic! The home that the children produced was outstanding, with a lot of thought put into the design and features. Da iawn!

Fishy Fruit in Year 1

The children enjoyed making their own healthy snacks linked to our topic of ‘Under the Sea’. They used a selection of fruit to create sea creatures, such as fish and turtles. We revisited our recent maths lesson linked to finding half of an item and we used several storybooks to give us inspiration for our designs. They loved eating their creations at the end too!

Move over David Attenborough…Year 1 are coming!

As part of our sharks topic, we decided to use our explanation skills, that we have been developing in our language sessions, to create our very own shark documentaries! We used the Green Screen to help us present our ‘in studio’ part, explaining the different features that sharks have. Then, we decided to ‘dive down’ into the ocean, using the VR goggles and present the second part of our documentaries, explaining what we could see.

Super sharks

In Year 1, we have been enjoying finding out all about sharks. We read that sharks have lots of different features to help them to swim and not to sink. One reason is that sharks have very oily livers, which helps them to float, so we decided to make our own ‘sharks’ and do an investigation to find out if this theory is true. We filled one ‘shark’ with water and one with oil. We predicted what we thought would happen and then tested it out ourselves, recording our results. We were amazed to see that the ‘oily shark’ did in fact float!!

Water safety

We have been learning how to stay safe near water in Year 1. We have had lots of discussions about what we need to remember when near any type of water, such as swimming pools, rivers/lakes and the sea…hopefully this knowledge will help to keep us even more safe in the summer months ahead.

Let’s set sail…

The children were set the task of creating their own unsinkable ships that could sail in icy waters! They chose their materials and resources to build their ships and even chose names too. They created posters to persuade other to board their ships and then they sold tickets to each other (remembering they’d need to add the corresponding number of passengers to their ships before the maiden voyage!)
The children each took turns to sail their ships…there were definitely a few surprises in regards to which ships made it across! It certainly gave the children a lot to think about in relation to design, shape, size, floating/sinking etc. Here are some of the children testing out their ships…

Year 1: Ship challenge

The Year 1 children have been set the challenge of creating ships that can sail across an icy ocean, without sinking! The children investigated which materials would be best and then got to work building their ships.
Next, the children had to name their ships and, using their persuasive writing skills, create a poster to try and convince their peers to buy tickets for the maiden voyage. Today, the children will use their maths and problem solving skills to sell tickets and record how many tickets they have sold and profit made, however they need to think about how many tickets they sell as their ships will need to carry the passengers! There’s a lot to think about!

Year 1: The Titanic

We have been finding out all the the Titanic in Year 1. The children have been busy researching and have found out some surprising (and shocking!) facts about the tragedy. The children loved using their GetEpic accounts on the computers to find texts about the Titanic and also did wordsearches to familiarise themselves with some of the new vocabulary. The children couldn’t believe that it took 3 years to build the Titanic so tried to build their own versions using the construction in class- they even tried to include the different decks and compartments and then realised what a tricky job it is to build a huge ship! Some of the children loved gathering different facts and have been busy planning a show that they want to perform to help us learn even more about the Titanic too.
We hope to find out even more about the fascinating even over the next few days…
