Air Resistance v Gravity

Year 5 hard a truly mind blowing afternoon when we discussed Galileo’s theory of everything dropping to earth from height, at the same speed regardless of weight or size!

We put this theory to the test by dropping items of different sizes and weights to the ground. The children made predictions about which would fall quickest and backed these up with reasons e.g. it has more surface area, it’s heavier etc.

We then looked at air resistance with a parachute and saw that the air does in fact slow things down. However the children were still not 100% convinced that gravity makes things fall at the same pace! We then watched to prove that they do when there is no air to resist the falling objects! It’s fair to say there were a few startled faces!
