Why don’t sharks sink? – Year 1 Science Investigation

This week Year 1 have enjoyed undertaking a Science Investigation exploring how sharks can move through the ocean without sinking.

We started by making predictions and writing out our method equipment lists.

We then used a bottle of water containing oil to represent our shark (sharks liver) and another bottle filled with water only to represent another. We learnt through putting the bottles in the water that the shark with the oil was able to float! The children were then able to draw the conclusion that sharks do not sink because oil is lighter than water and so this is how sharks maintain buoyancy.

An excellent investigation Year 1- da iawn!
