We had a fantastic discussion this afternoon which was initially based on the question “what does the word ‘family’ mean to you?”. It was so interesting to hear the children’s responses and how mature and open minded their thinking was. We touched on every kind of different family… marriage, separation, divorce, fostering, adoption, brothers, sisters, step families. We then read two beautiful stories which encouraged even more discussion. We realised that all of our families are different but the one thing all the children have in common is how very loved they all are. They then completed a task “I am special to my family because…” and they were encouraged to finish the sentence. We had responses such as “I am loved”, “I am wonderful”, “I am beautiful”. I literally had tears in my eyes teaching this lesson, I am so proud of them.
