As part of our sunflower challenge, Dosbarth Cherry Blossom have been learning all about seeds. They found out that many, but not all plants grow from seeds and we can find these seeds in the fruit of the plant. Our investigation today involved cutting up a range of different fruits to see if we could find the seeds. First we read the book, ‘A fruit is a suitcase for seeds’ then the children used magnifying glasses to examine the different fruit. The children used lots of amazing adjectives to describe the look, feel, smell and taste of the fruit. Then came the exciting part. The children used special safety knives to cut up the fruit to see where the seeds were hiding. They cut up apples, pears, strawberries, raspberries, plums, melon, kiwi, pomegranates, cucumber, tomatoes, mango, nectarines, peppers and avocados. They found out that some plants have little seeds inside, some have a large seed or pit and that strawberries have their seeds on the outside. The children also decided to plant the pit from the avocado to see what would happen.
