We are currently looking at persuasive texts in Year 5. We looked at the various features they include, such as exaggeration, emotive language, repetition, rule of 3, a hint of sarcasm and rhetorical questions. We then looked at a piece of text and highlighted the features we found. Once we were comfortable with the features we played ‘conscience alley’ where there were two opposing sides with one child, walking through the middle listening to all arguments and deciding who was most persuasive. The topics were; ‘should we eat chips every day’ and ‘who are the best – boys or girls!’ The children used their features well during the exercise. Look out for these techniques the next time they are asking for something in the shop ??
