Following on from our work on the Welsh myth Yr Afanc, this week we watched a fantastic film called A Monster in the Lake. The film is based on the Afanc myth, with a modern day twist. In the film, a young girl named Anwen discovers the reason behind the Afanc’s anger is the amount of rubbish in the lake, which is polluting it’s habitat. She then worked with villagers to clean up the lake, and the Afanc was never seen or heard of again! We discussed the importance of reusing, reducing and recycling waste, and this inspired the children to create posters on JIT to persuade people to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We also did lots of work discussing the way teh film was made, focusing on the 6 elements: character, colour, camera, setting, story and sound. The children has a fantastic understanding, and impressed with their use of terminology such as long shot, close shot, etc.
